Feet to the Fire
03:39
|
|||
With anger biting at my heels I walked the wound-lit night
Chasing only bitter zeal for I was in the right
Wandered out by Cottons Low
Lay down in the grass
The morning sun began to show and soon the anger passed
Tripping up the steps back home, the mortar slick with dew
The pitted brick and hearth aglow and standing there was you
Then the tears fell down like rain
Fast upon my heart
For never would we be the same and never could we part
And now you're holding my feet to the fire
Holding my feet to the fire
Ain't gotta preach to the choir no more, for now I know
This world's a bed of blood and bone, serpents' tongues and hogs
Where order's rapped for with a gun and woe the underdog
So when I'm bidding carrion crow
Growing cold as stone
Bury me at Cottons Low, but near the steps back home.

Nothing But the Fall
03:00
|
|||
Well I'd have to be a real good liar
Just to say that it doesn't hurt no more
That it wasn't so hard to pick myself up from off the floor.
And among my most dearly held desires
You're the one that I say'll still come true
Well it just goes to show how there's never no getting over you.
Close calls and gray shades and horseshoes and hand grenades
I'm living it down, day after day
Coming so close yet so far away
All this time healing nothing much at all
And I don't know why, I don't know why
All this love feeling nothing but the fall
Didn't know how high, I didn't know how high
Well I'd have to be a real crack actor
Just to make you believe that I'm all right
That a stable of others is here to help me make it through the night
And among the many underlying factors
There's my tendency to roll away the stone
Oh I never could tell when to leave a thing well enough alone
Cigars and brass rings all hanging from heart strings
I'm pulling them down, night after night
Hoping the next one'll turn on the light
All this time healing nothing much at all
And I don't know why, I don't know why
All this love feeling nothing but the fall
Didn't know how high, I didn't know how high.

Ordinary Time
04:28
|
|||
I done earned myself a bad reputation
Known to stutter through a simple explanation
I must've picked me up a brand new disease
She got me falling, crawling on my knees
I been waking up so early in the morning
Just awaiting for the new day's dawning
The sky is falling down in feathers and leaves
She got me sighing, crying please, please, please
O be still my heart
My love, my art
Coursing through my veins
My bones, my brain
I been tending to these onions and tomatoes
Digging soil rich in sulfur and plumbago
They magnetize a little more than they should, but
Them pins and needles tasting mm, mm, good
I been coughing up a funny-colored humor
My nurse practitioner is saying it's a tumor
I take a tonic with a bottle of wine
It keeps me healing, feeling oh so fine
Wasted saviors all
We flesh, we crawl
Let your light fall prey
Bare house, bright day.

Child Enough
04:28
|
|||
So it's come to this, so we're really through
Say goodbye if you want to
Is it someone else? Something new?
Well go and try if you want to
Look at you all flush with freedom
Powdered milk and shattered glass
Life is rife with second chances
And this too shall pass...
So don't say sorry, morning glory
Look around, you'll see no chains no iron cuffs
So just refrain from all your crying, child stuff
You're not child enough.
You can use your words, to yourself be true
Say goodbye if you want to
You don't need my help, you need a wrecking crew
Go on and try if you want to
New beginnings burnished brightly
Powdered blue with pure renown
But soon enough we wake in darkness
And ashes all fall down...
So don't say sorry, morning glory
Look around, you'll see no chains no iron cuffs
So just refrain from all your crying, child stuff
You're not child enough.
How long can a candle waver?
How long till the flame goes out?
How long can a heart remember
With every moment passed between us like a silent shout?
So don't say sorry, morning glory
Look around, you'll see no chains no iron cuffs
So just refrain from all your crying, child stuff
You're not child enough.

Luna
04:24
|
|||
The luna's endless circles
Like it's swimming in the light
Brethren butterflies are sleeping tight
When you flame out will it feel as free
Morning gathers wing dust for her tea
The comet's tail is whipping
As it sails across the night
Shining like some chariot in white
When you flame out out who will even see
Born in darkness, dust you'll always be
They're playing keepaway with my heart...

Rain Sheep
03:48
|
|||
Rain hits the street and it leaves a mark
A fitting end to the day
With tired faces we regard the sky
As if to cherish the gray
Blue light wavers on the windowpanes
Like water lapping a stone
We do our best to keep a shuttered heart
Grateful to be left alone
A wondrous night, spirit unseen
We hide ourselves away...
A child taken in the prime of life
A mother losing her mind
We hear her wailing in our darkest dreams, now
We've yet to leave it behind
A grim acceptance of the way it is
A freedom we can't defend
We take what's offered and just keep our mouths shut
It all works out in the end
The rug's on the floor
The cross in the hall
It feels indecent to pray
Never you mind
Never you mind
Never you mind today.

If Only It Was Raining
03:51
|
|||
As the sun comes up you wonder if you're able
To pull the blinds upon another weary day
For the last thing you remember is the table
How you reached across it as she pulled away
With the sunlight coming in you start to tremble
As the memories and heartache search for shade
Now if only there was something could resemble
How you feel upon another weary day
Now if only it was raining, wouldn't that be apropos
Looking at it every which way but you'll never make it so
And now the sweethearts are parading, pretty maids in a row
If only it was raining, wouldn't that be apropos
You can leave your umbrella standing in the hall
You won't need no old blue raincoat after all
For the only waterfalls will be the tears you're crying...
Well the weatherman predicts a week of sunshine
You could slap that silly grin right off his face
For it looks as though you'll have to wait till nighttime
For you heart to feel it's in its proper place
Now if only it was raining, wouldn't that be bittersweet
Pull a chair up to the window, count the puddles in the street
They say a heart is only broken when you no longer hear it beat
If only it was raining, wouldn't that be bittersweet.

Geronimo
04:27
|
|||
We knew Geronimo well
His horses whinnied but they never once feel
Dark forces bade their benediction
And with Geronimo's sight
We took to brandishing our pistols at night
Still falling back on fibs and fictions
Horses, hearses, elders and their nurses
How were we to know?
Together we were lonely
Now separate, loving one another only...
We'd watch Geronimo sit
The war tarried as if carried adrift
Both sides insisting they've the advantage
And with Geronimo's breath
We'd pray to privatized angels of death
Intoxicated by hindsight's crystal vantage
Windows, mirrors, mothers and superiors
How were we to tell?
Together we were spiteful
Now desperate, dying to be reunited
We knew Geronimo well
His horses whinnied but they never once feel
Dark forces bade their benediction.

Night
03:25
|
|||
Often the afternoon will stall
Slowing its exodus down to a crawl
Showing in doorways, tarrying in the halls
Ribbons of color worn threadbare
Sun running down as it sends up a flare
Mercury gloaming, quicksilver in the air
Destiny waits as if by rite
Eager to dance like a blind acolyte
Begging the question, who will she choose tonight
And love is alive at times like these
Ready to shine to like the moon in the trees
What are the chances love shines a light on me?
The wind feels quicker running on night's pitch skin
You can hear its promise, asking where you been
And distant coyotes, they howl at the same old moon
After all this time you'd think they'd change their tune
It's funny, the darkness
Keeps memories bright as a brand new dime
Particulate sharpness
A solace that sweetens, given time.

Heathen Sunday
05:35
|
|||
Some keep the sabbath clutching rosaries and nosegays
Just like they done from birth
But there's a Heaven in my waking up on Sunday
Don't have to go to church...
Ain't too much difference 'tween a surplice and a nightgown
And wingtips ain't wings
My patch of garden keeps a choir in its branches
I hear the sexton sing:
"Come now, all ye faithful, ain't no need for tithing
Hark! There's a hidden angel in the daylight's shining"
O, beautiful dreamers of worlds
Call up the old glory unfurled.
